General presentation : GERM, the Magnetic Resonance Study Group, is organising a School from 18 to 23 March 2013 in Cargèse (Corsica). The aim of the School is to bring together users from a variety of backgrounds (physics, chemistry, biology) - particularly students - and to introduce them to the key concepts of NMR, so that they can acquire a good understanding of emerging techniques and the autonomy needed to implement the most cutting-edge methodologies in this vast field on the spectrometers and imagers to which they have access.
Scientific background : Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is a constantly evolving spectroscopy that is essential for characterising systems such as surface catalysts, nanomaterials, glasses, polymers, membrane proteins and fibrillar proteins at the atomic scale. NMR is also emerging as a major technique for analysing biological fluids. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is revolutionising the approach to cognitive sciences. Finally, in the field of physics, NMR is now at the heart of the development of new quantum computers. Over the last few years, NMR has undergone a number of developments and its possible applications have been further extended. All these fields of application have a common basis, namely the underlying concepts of Magnetic Resonance. In this context, we feel it is important to set up a thematic NMR school with the aim of training our research staff in the fundamentals of this spectroscopy. This school will be aimed at PhD students, post-docs, engineers and researchers wishing to acquire a good grasp of the fundamental concepts of magnetic resonance, and to tackle all of its areas of application. Some of the key concepts that will be covered include: theoretical formalism, anisotropic interactions, multi-dimensional NMR, pulse sequences in spectroscopy and imaging, signal processing methods, instrumentation, phase cycling, relaxation, etc. The most cutting-edge applications will also be discussed. Speakers will include leading French and international figures from the NMR community at the forefront of scientific research.
Objectives, challenges, duration : The school will be structured around lectures (in the morning) and tutorials or practical work (in the afternoon), allowing students to deepen their theoretical knowledge. The most recent applications of NMR will also be covered in seminars. Between 1 p.m. and 3.30 p.m., time will be devoted to informal exchanges, to create links between young people working in the field of NMR (and therefore potential future colleagues), but also with the lecturers in the courses and TDs. Organised in the friendly setting of Cargèse over a period of 5 full days, this school should encourage exchanges between lecturers and trainees and help to create the necessary foundations for the development of cutting-edge applications in a variety of fields. A similar formula was used five years ago and was much appreciated by the participants.
Registration for GERM 2013 is now closed.
This School is financed by the CNRS permanent training programme, and is therefore free of charge for CNRS staff.
This School is organised with the support of the "Structural NMR in the Paris Basin" network.
Non-CNRS staff will be required to pay a registration fee of 450 euros (350 euros for students). The registration fee includes transfer from Ajaccio airport, accommodation in a double room for 6 nights (from Sunday 18 to Saturday 23 March), lunches and dinner on Wednesday evening.
There are two stages to the registration procedure: 1- Request for registration (you will need to create an account to access online registration). 2- Confirmation of registration
At the end of the first stage, the application will be validated and confirmed by the School's organising committee. The participant will then fill in the validation form and will be asked to pay the registration fee, if applicable.
